Arjan van Baest (1969) is a composer and conductor.

He is conductor of the Dominicuskerk in Amsterdam, artistic director/conductor of The Bach Cantons Tilburg Foundation, FBach Choir and Orchestra, Cantiqua Concert (concert choir) and COMA Eindhoven (ensemble for contemporary music). With this and other ensembles he performed many works for choir and orchestra, including Mozart's Die Zauberflote, Handels Messiah,Mozart's Requiem, Haydn's Die Schopfung and all of Bach's great works.

Compositions by Van Baest include 'Bill est recent' for organ, saxophone quartet, double bass and percussion (first prize in the Eindhoven Festival Nieuwe Organ Music 2010), 'For God to God' for soprano and choir on texts by Etty Hillesum (premiere in 2013 in Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, Amsterdam), and the theatre works 'Mingo' and 'Lodewijk Napoleon in Brabant'. Some of his choral works are recorded on the CD 'Pro Luce' (Stichting Muziek Nu, 2013). In 2017 the CD 'Reading in bed' came out, with eight small art songs. As pianist and organist, Van Baest collaborates with Dorine van der Kei, Theaterchor Niederrhein (Kevelaer, Germany) and composer/conductor Tom Lowentha.

Van Baest is a research coach at the Master of Music of the Fontys School of the Arts in Tilburg. With composer Evert van Merode, he founded the Music Now Foundation a platform for the development and performance of new music. Van Baest studied church organ and music theory with Henk de Croon. At Fontys University of Arts he studied composition with Kees Schoonenbeek,choir direction with Louis Buskens (cum laude) and orchestral direction at Arjan Tien. Van Baest obtained his PhD from the Faculty of Arts at Tilburg University with the thesis 'A Semiotics of Opera', in which he worked out the semiotics of Charles Sanders Peirce for music and text.
Van Baest is president of the Hanns Eisler Foundation in the Netherlands. He lives in Eindhoven.
