ジョン・ダウランド John Dowland："Flow my teares" 「流れよわが涙」

ジョン・ダウランド（John Dowland, 1563年-1626年2月20日）は、イギリスの作曲家、リュート奏者である。
1588年にオックスフォード大学で音楽学士となった。宮廷リュート奏者を望むも、自身がカトリック教徒であったため、イングランド国教会の英国では受け入れられず、海外に職を求めた。ニュルンベルク、ヴェネツィア、フィレンツェなどヨーロッパ各地を遍歴し、1598～1606年にはデンマークでクリスチャン4世付きのリュート奏者を務めた。

1606年にイギリスへ戻り、1612年に国王付きのリュート奏者となった。ダウランド自身は、その名のもじりである "semper dolens"（常に嘆いている）を標榜したが、陽気な人間であったと伝えられる。
作品は声楽とリュート音楽に分けられる。宗教的な楽曲はほとんど見あたらず、愛や悲しみを歌う通俗作品が特徴的である。

声楽は世俗曲であり、1597年、1600年、1603年に歌曲集が出版され、80以上の作品が残されている。『流れよ我が涙』(Flow my tears)は当時のもっとも高名な歌である。

Downe vaine lights shine you no more, No nights are dark enough for those That in dispaire their last fortunes deplore, Light doth but shame disclose. 3. Never may my woes be relieved, Since pittie is fled, And teares, and sighes, and grones My wearie days of all joyes have deprived.

4. From the highest spire of contentment, My fortune is throwne, And feare, and griefe, and paine For my deserts, are my hopes since hope is gone. 5. Hark you shadowes that in darnesse dwell, Learn to contemne light, Happy that in hell Feele not the worlds despite.
