Maarten Engeltjes ( Zwolle , 1984 ) is a Dutch counter tenor (countertenor or altus). He sings solo parts (alto) in oratorios and other vocal works and performs as an opera singer .


Biography

At the age of four, Engeltjes sang as a boy soprano in the 'Stadsknapenkoor' in Elburg As a sixteen year old, he made his solo debut as a countertenor soloist in the St. Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach . The British countertenor Michael Chance played an important role in that period. He selected the then 19-year-old Engeltjes for a master class, which was broadcast on Dutch television. Angel's fame in the Netherlands was further increased in 2004 by a television program in which he sang a few duets with Chance, including An ode on the Death of Mr. Henry Purcell , directed by Gustav Leonhardt . Engeltjes graduated cum laude in 2007 from the Royal Conservatory (The Hague) . During his training he was taught by Maria Acda, Manon Heijne and Andreas Scholl, among others . Engeltjes performs a lot as a soloist with international orchestras and opera companies. The repertoire of Engeltjes includes main roles in operas (including the role of Cherubino in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro ) and solo parts in major oratorios such as St. Matthew's Passion , St. John's Passion and Weihnachtsoratorium by Bach and Messiah by Handel , as well as chamber music and song recitals by well-known and less well-known composers. In addition to Bach and Handel, Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Purcell, Cavalli and Pergolesi are favorites. Engeltjes performs in large and smaller halls in the Netherlands and around the world. Major foreign performances in recent years have been at Lincoln Center (New York), Theatre des Champs-Elysees (Paris), Philharmonie (Berlin), Izumi Hall (Tokyo), Palao de la Musica (Barcelona), Barbican Hall (London), Salle Bourgie (Montreal), Tonhalle (Zurich), and Konzerthaus (Vienna).
