Maria Milstein is a violinist , born in Moscow in 1985.


Born into a family of Russian musicians, Maria Milstein started playing the violin at the age of five. In 1991, his family moved to France . The musician begins her professional musical apprenticeship with violinist Pavel Vernikov in Fiesole , Italy . She then joined the Amsterdam Conservatory in the class of violinist Ilya Grubert where she obtained with the highest marks, a Bachelor in 2008, then a Master in 2010 in London, with the violinist David Takeno .

Maria Milstein plays on a violin made by Michel Angelo Bergonzi (1721-1758, Cremona , Italy) and lent by the Dutch Foundation of Musical Instruments.

His grandfather Yakov Milstein was a musicologist and piano teacher at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow.

Since 2005, she has been a duo with her sister, pianist Nathalia Milstein.

Professional life

Solo career

Between 2011 and 2014, Maria Milstein is artist in residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Belgium , in the class of violinist and conductor Augustin Dumay.

She is invited to perform in the Netherlands and accompanies as soloist the National Orchestra of Belgium , the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Chamber Orchestra of Wallonia , the Orchestra Musica Viva and the Sinfonietta of Amsterdam.

in 2015, she recorded with the pianist Hanna Shybayeva, the album "Sounds of War" at Cobra Records featuring the sonatas of Francis Poulenc , Leos Janacek and Sergei Prokofiev. The album won the same year, an Edison Klassiek Award in the category chamber music.

In February 2016, she received the Borletti-Buitoni Trust, awarded to artists or ensembles at a stage of career development.

In 2017, the violinist made his debut as a soloist with the Dutch Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in the Glazunov Concerto, conducted by Vasily Petrenko.

Since September 2014, Maria Milstein is a teacher at the Amsterdam Conservatory.

Van Baerle Trio

Maria Milstein founded Van Baerle Trio in 2004 with pianist Hannes Minnaar and cellist Gideon den Herder. The three musicians met during their respective studies at the Amsterdam Conservatory . Van Baerle Trio was formed under the direction of Russian musician Dimitri Ferschtman. In 2008, the pianist Menahem Pressler invites them to accompany him at various performances.

The ensemble was distinguished at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich and the Lyon Chamber Music International and won the Vriendenkrans Competition and the Kersjes Prize in the Netherlands.

In 2014, the musicians participate in the ECOS Rising Stars tour and perform in different European venues such as the Cologne Philharmonie, the Barbican Center of London, the Musikverein in Vienna or the Cite de la Musique in Paris.

Two albums came out of this collaboration, a first record for Et'cetera 14 , around the works of Theo Loevendie , Camille Saint-Saens and Maurice Ravel in 2013 and winner of the Edison Klassiek Award 15 . A second album is released in September 2014, Felix Mendelssohn , Piano Trios at Challenge Records.

Van Baerle Trio has participated several times in the program "Generation ... Young Performers" by Gaelle Le Gallic on France Musique.
