Hubert Giesen (* 13. January 1898 in Kornelimunster; † 11. February 1980) was a German pianist.

Life and work

He comes from an old, resident in Kornelimunster since the 17th century family. Giesen studied music at the Conservatory in Cologne and later at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart. His teachers were beside Fritz Busch, Lazzaro Uziello in Cologne and Max von Pauer and Joseph Haas in Stuttgart.
After the late 1920s as a companion of the great violinist Adolf Busch had earned at concerts in Rome, Amsterdam, Berlin and New York his spurs, he traveled for two years with Yehudi Menuhin across Europe and America. Hubert Giesen has countless concerts of great violinist Fritz Kreisler and Erika Morini accompanied and then was a partner of Leo Slezak, Julius Patzak, Sigrid Onegin, Erna Berger, Erna Sack and many other famous musicians of his time.

In 1943 he married the opera and concert singer Ellinor Junker -Giesen.
As Ferdinand Leitner in 1943 Kapellmeister of the theater at Nollendorfplatz in Berlin, came two of his singer, Karl Schmitt-Walter and Walther Ludwig to Giesen to Stuttgart, which he accompanied on their recitals. They continued the tradition of German Lieder singing and were then replaced by the next generation of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Hermann Prey and the prematurely deceased Fritz Wunderlich. Also Anneliese Rothenberger was accompanied by him at the piano.

After 1945, he specialized in the accompaniment of song recitals, among others, Ernst Haefliger, but especially in the short, congenial collaboration with the tenor Fritz Wunderlich. Giesen was not only a sensitive accompanist, but also intellectual and artistic mentor of Wunderlich.
From 1943-1969 was Giesen professor at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart. Among his students were there Werner Hollweg, Edgar Keenon, Gerolf Scheder and Thomas Pfeiffer.
