Jan Willem de Vriend ( Leiden , July 31, 1962 ) is a Dutch conductor and violinist .


Career

De Vriend was trained as a violinist. He studied at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and the Royal Conservatory in The Hague . Already during his studies he conducted performances of Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss and Der Silbersee by Kurt Weill .

In 1982 De Vriend founded the Combattimento Consort Amsterdam , which specializes in 17th and 18th century music. As artistic director, concertmaster and conductor, he gave many concerts and opera productions in the Netherlands and abroad with the Combattimento Consort. He also made a lot of CD recordings with the Combattimento Consort. De Vriend focuses entirely on his activities as a conductor from the 2013-2014 season.

He has regularly performed with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra , the Residentie Orkest , the Radio Chamber Orchestra (later the Radio Chamber Philharmonic ), the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra , the Limburg Symphony Orchestra , the Brabants Orkest , the Gelders Orkest and the Noord Nederlands Orkest . Abroad he was guest conductor at the RIAS Jugend Orchester , the Deutsche Kammer Philharmonie , the Swedish ensemble Musica Vitae , the NDR-Orchester , Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg , SWR Orchester Stuttgart, Konzerthausorchester Berlin and the Wiener Concert-Verein . From 2006 until he is succeeded by Ed Spanjaard in 2017, he is chief conductor and artistic director of the Orchestra of the East in Enschede . In March 2014, the Residentie Orkest announced that De Vriend was appointed as permanent conductor as of 1 August 2015 for the duration of four seasons.

Among the operas De Vriend conducted were Arminio by Heinrich von Biber , Rodelinda , Alcina , Agrippina and Orlando by Georg Friedrich Handel , L'incoronnazione di Poppea and L'Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi , King Arthur and Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell with the Independent Theater , the Huis aan de Amstel and the Nationale Reisopera . He also directed Mozart's Magic Flute at the Opera du Rhin in Strasbourg , Monteverdi's L'Orfeo at the Lucerne Opera, Der Stein der Weisen (Mozart and others) in a directed by Eva Buchmann and Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss. At the Schwetzinger Festival he conducted the opera Rosamunde by the 18th-century composer Anton Schweitzer in a directed by Ernst Daniel Herzog.
