Kay Johannsen (* October 1, 1961) is a German organist, harpsichordist, conductor and choirmaster.

He studied church music, organ and conducting in Freiburg im Breisgau and Boston. Since 1994 he has been Cantor and organist at the Stiftskirche in Stuttgart, where he founded the Stuttgart Kantorei and artistic head of the "hour of church music". in 1998, he was appointed Director of church music. He won several prizes in national and international organ competitions, as the first prize at the German music competition in Bonn in 1988.

Since his soloist diploma with distinction, Kay Johannsen performs as an organist at festivals in Europe, Asia, South America, South Africa and the United States. As a soloist in concerts and organ symphonies by Handel, C.P.E. Bach, Bossi, Strauss, Rheinberger, Saint-Saens, Dupre, Poulenc, Fortig, he appeared Katzer, Bose and Rihm with many symphony orchestras in the country and abroad. As a continuo player he collaborated with the Berlin Philharmonic under Claudio Abbado, the Vienna Philharmonic under Trevor Pinnock or the Berlin Baroque soloists. It created radio recordings in the country and abroad, as well as numerous CDs Awards (such as the "Diapason d 'Or" and the "Golden Bobby" of the Association of German sound engineer) with organ works by Bach, Boely, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Liszt, Franck, Reger, Widor and Fairbairn. On the new mill iron organ of the Stuttgarter Stiftskirche, he played complete organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach in the summer of 2007 in a concert cycle (documented in a CD recording). As a harpsichordist, he debuted in 2003 with the Goldberg Variations, in 2004 the art of Fugue, in 2005 the well-tempered Clavier I and 2006 the six Partitas.

As a conductor led Kay Johannsen with his orchestras, the Stuttgart-based choir, the ensemble 94 and the soloist ensemble vocal art, oratorios by Georg Friedrich Handel, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Franz Schmidt (the book with seven seals), Frank Martin (Golgotha) and Wolfgang Rihm. In special thematic cycles he deals with also the oratorios, cantatas, orchestral concerts and chamber music by J.S. Bach.
